With almost 200 members, United Methodist Women of Metropolitan Memorial is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Metropolitan’s UMW offers programs and service opportunities for women of all ages with a variety of meeting times and formats. There are six fellowship circles that meet regularly for study, devotion, mission work and mutual support.

UMW Annual Bazaar
The Annual UMW Bazaar is a popular event in the life of our church. Mark your calendars! This year's bazaar will be held 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, with lunch available after the second service.
Engage in a little retail therapy for a cause, and get a bargain while you’re at it! Baked goods, books, collectibles, gift baskets, and hand-crafted items such as Christmas ornaments, greeting cards and Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls are among the treasures. Last year more than $16,000 was raised and given to local and global charities that support women and children across the world.
With less than a month before the sale, the UMW needs your help to make sure the church is ready for this opportunity to showcase the church to the neighborhood and the wider Washington community. Here’s how you can help:
•Donate Donations will be accepted until Thursday, Oct. 30, and may be dropped off in the UMW closet on the lower level of the church. (No toys or clothes this year, please.) The one exception is jewelry, which should be left with whomever is working the front desk in the office on weekdays and with the librarian in the library on Sundays.
•Sort and price UMW members meet 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays in the Terrace Room near the UMW closet to sort and price donations. A special evening session of sorting and pricing will be held 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14. For more information, call Bobbi Turnbull at 301.320.4154.
•Spread the news Flyers are available at the front desk of the church, and we’re always looking for more ways to get the word out. If you have a club, community or school newsletter or listserv, pass it along to Lesli Bales-Sherrod, who is handling publicity for the bazaar this year.

| Metropolitan Women Attend UMW Assembly Nine UMW members from Metropolitan attended the Quadrennial General Assembly of United Methodist Women in Anaheim, California, May 4 - 7. The Metropolitan delegation included Gayle Bauer, Eugenia Evans, Barbara Gaskill, Kristina Gill, Mary Jo Marchant, Martha Mizroch, Ann Michel, Anita Seline, and Nancy Wolfe. Anita's daughter, Elena, and Eugenia's daughter, Ellen, joined the group, making Metropolitan's delegation eleven. Over 8,000 women from around the world took part in the assembly. "Unless you've attended this wonderful event, it's hard to understand just how exhilarating assembly is," says Ann Michel, who has attended the last three quadrennials. "It's part revival, part family reunion, part mission fair, part call to action -- and it all adds up to an incredible celebration. It's just unbelievably inspiring to be with thousands of sisters and hear the stories of how UMW's support of mission changes lives." The four days were filled with singing, music and dance from around the world, Bible study, speakers representing the perspectives of women in different countries, and focus groups on a variety of topics. |
