This Sunday
Science and Belief in God
Sunday, July 6, 9 a.m., Parlor
Even though most of us have strong beliefs and adequate answers to their shallow challenges, many Christians have been concerned about the popularity of books that have been published in recent years by such “radical atheists” as Dawkins, Harris, and Hutchins. The Science and Religion class invites those from the congregation and the community to join them Sunday mornings for open and far-reaching discussions regarding these issues. The class will meet during July and August at 9 a.m prior to the joint worship service at 10 a.m.
During the summer months the focus will be on some of the essays in the new publication from the Templeton Foundation Press called “Does Science make belief in God obsolete?” Of particular interest is the third essay in the booklet authored by Dr. William D. Philips, the United Methodist physicist who was honored as a Nobel Laureate for his work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Dr. Philips is an active member of his congregation in Gaithersburg, the Fairhaven United Methodist Church, and he spoke at Metropolitan on several occasions in our Science and Religion Series in 2002-2003. The members of the Science and Religion class have arranged to have copies of this stimulating booklet available to anyone in the congregation. We urge you to look for this booklet in the narthex or in the foyer, and if you wish to join the class during the summer, please drop by the parlor any Sunday at 9 a.m.

Looking Ahead
Catch the Joy!
Summer Thursdays at Metropolitan
Thursdays, 7 p.m., Great Hall
Join us Thursday evenings in July and August for a time to catch your breath, experience some different styles of worship, learn some new hymns and songs, and worship with friends and neighbors. Maybe you are traveling on the weekends and can’t join us on Sunday mornings, maybe you just need something a little extra. You’ll find this and more at Metropolitan.
Our Thursday evening service is casual, come-as-you-are. Whether you are rushing from work or escaping the summer heat with your kids, the Great Hall is cool! Come early and walk the labyrinth; stay late for lemonade and cookies. Children are welcome! We don’t have a nursery or childcare but we love their joyful noise.
Our first Thursday, July 3 will be a good old-fashioned hymn sing. Let us know your favorites and we’ll be sure to include them. Look forward to other worship services led by our ASP and VIM teams, Clown Communion, Taize, and more. Hope to see you there.
